We know that the best things in life are often unplanned. For many of our community members, becoming a pet parent happens by a stroke of luck… a shared post, a chance encounter, or a bird in need of a forever home.

That is exactly how Chewie, a vibrant Green Cheek Conure, found his way into the heart of his new mum. Today, we’re sharing their story to celebrate the joy of bird ownership and explore why having an insurance policy is the kindest thing you can do for your feathered friend.

A match made in heaven

Chewie’s journey to his new home began on a local Facebook group. His previous owner, Chris, was looking for a forever home for Chewie after a change in personal circumstances. He wanted nothing in return, only the assurance that Chewie would be loved endlessly.

And that’s exactly what he got. Chewie has settled into his new life of luxury. He doesn’t live in a “cage” as he has a whole “house”, complete with a favourite fleecy blanket for his naps.

“He crawls under the blanket when he wants to go to bed… and stays there until he decides to wake me up by calling his name and banging on the back of his house!” says his mum.

Life with a Green Cheek Conure

Green Cheek Conures are famous for their big personalities, and Chewie is no exception.

  • After returning home, Chewie hurtles toward his Mum, puffing himself up and chattering away as if giving her a firm telling-off for leaving him behind.
  • Chewie is a fan of the finer things, especially mango, strawberries, and the occasional tiny crust of toast held delicately in his foot.
  • Like many parrots, he likes to be the centre of attention. He’ll voice his disapproval if the hoover comes out or if his Mum stays in the kitchen too long making a brew!

The importance of an avian vet

One of the most vital steps for any new bird owner is finding a specialist vet. Exotic birds have unique physiology, and a general practice vet may not always have the specific equipment or knowledge required.

Chewie is lucky to have Edda, a local avian vet. Regular check-ups every six months for claw clipping and beak maintenance keep him in tip-top shape. These routine visits are also the perfect time for owners to get reassurance that they are doing a great job.

Why insurance is a no-brainer

While Chewie’s Mum hasn’t had to make a claim yet – and we hope she never has to – she is a firm advocate for being prepared.

Birds are masters of disguise. In the wild, showing weakness makes them a target, so they often hide signs of illness until they are quite poorly. This means when they do need a vet, it can often be an emergency.

For owners on a budget, insurance provides a vital safety net:

  • Knowing you only have to cover the excess, rather than a bill totalling hundreds or thousands of pounds.
  • Instead of worrying about how to pay for treatment, you can focus entirely on your bird’s health and comfort.
  • You won’t hesitate to visit the vet the moment you notice something isn’t quite right.

As Chewie’s Mum says: “It’s better to be safe than sorry and go through the utterly devastating heartbreak of losing your angel.”

Looking to the future

With a lifespan of 15 to 30 years, Chewie and his Mum have many more years of naps and strawberry snacks ahead of them. We are so proud to be part of their journey, providing the protection that allows them to focus on the fun stuff.
