Do I need insurance to keep dangerous wild animals?

Yes. To keep dangerous wild animals, owners of animals listed in the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976, must apply for a license from their local authority. One of the application requirements is to have public liability insurance.

What animals are included in the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976?

Some of the more commonly owned dangerous wild animals in the UK include: 
 
Reptiles – including caimans and dwarf crocodiles

Snakes – including venomous cobras, vipers and rattlesnakes

Spiders and scorpions – including wandering spiders, funnel web spiders and venomous scorpions 

Large lizards – including the beaded lizard and the gila monster 

Big cats – including servals and caracals  

Primates – including lemurs and capuchins
