Owning a parrot is so much fun. They bring energy and joy into your life. But caring for them isn’t always easy, especially when it comes to their health. Parrots can get sick or injured, and vet bills add up fast. That’s where pet insurance comes in. It gives you peace of mind so you can focus on helping your parrot without worrying about costs.

Pet insurance covers everything from check-ups to emergencies, keeping you prepared and ensuring your parrot gets the care they need. Your parrot – and your stress levels – will thank you!

How much does Parrot Insurance cost?

Based on an African Grey costing £2,000, our highest level of cover Premier, costs £33.28 a month. It offers up to £5,000 of cover for vet fees, death and theft.

Next step down, our Essential policy costs £30.18 a month with cover of up to £2,500 of vet fees, death and theft.

Our cheapest level of cover costs £24.32 a month. Our Basic policy covers death and theft only and does not include vet fees.

Insurance for older parrots

We can insure birds up to any age, as long as they’re over 12 weeks. So whether your parrot is 12 weeks, or 12 years, we can insure it, as long as our Policy Terms and Conditions are met.

You can guess your bird’s age during the application if you’re not sure.

Can you insure birds that have recently been unwell?

If your bird has been treated by a vet for an accident or illness in the 3 months before your policy starts, we’ll need to wait 3 months after the treatment ends to insure them. After that, you can get cover for your bird, but any pre-existing conditions won’t be included for the first 12 months. Once that period is up, those conditions can be covered too, as long as they meet the policy terms and conditions.

Your bird needs to be fit and healthy when you take out the policy. Be sure to check out our Policy Terms and Conditions for all the details.

Sadly, as prey animals, parrots are hard-wired to hide illness, meaning they may not show symptoms until they’re quite poorly. Conditions such as Aspergillosis, (a fungal infection, that can be chronic or acute) and Fatty liver disease, which is usually caused by an incorrect diet are just two conditions seen by Exotic Direct.

If you suspect your parrot is ill, it’s important you get care as soon as possible, to ensure the best possible outcome.
