As a responsible pet owner, your pet’s health will be hugely important to you. You’ll likely be registered at a vet to ensure your pet receives the care they require if they become unwell.

Many of us know all too well that vet bills can be expensive and if follow up or long-term care is required, they can quickly escalate. Having pet insurance can reduce the worry at an already stressful time and can hugely help with costs for your pet’s health.

How much does reptile insurance cost?

You will pay £145.76 a year or 10 instalments of around £14.57 on our Premier policy. It offers up to £1,000 of vet fees, death and theft cover.

Our Essential policy costs £127.84 a year or 10 instalments of approximately £12.78. It covers up to £1,000 of vet fees.

Our cheapest level of cover costs £42.87 a year or can be spread over 10 instalments of around £4.28. Our Basic policy covers death and theft only and does not include vet fees.

The price for the Premier and Basic policy is based on a Bearded dragon costing £70. The cost of insurance will vary depending on the value of your pet. All prices were correct in May 2022.

Insurance for older reptiles

We can insure lizards and snakes up to any age, and cover can start from 12 weeks of age.

Can you insure reptiles that have recently been unwell?

If your reptile has seen a vet in the previous 3 months for an accident or illness we’re unable to insure them.

Once your reptile has been 3 months treatment free you can insure them, as long as they’re fit and healthy. Any pre-existing conditions cannot be covered in the first 12 months of insurance.

Caring for your reptile

The care requirements for lizards and snakes can be complex, requiring the correct vivarium, heating, UV lighting, humidity and substrate.

Although getting their food and environment right can be a financial commitment, we know owners form close emotional connections with their reptiles.

Lizards, such as bearded dragons, have extraordinary personalities. And all lizards and snakes have traits that make them unique and mean owners love them all the more. But caring for your pet doesn’t stop at their equipment or food. Access to vet care when they’re ill is equally important.

Lizards and snakes tend not to show illness until it’s quite far advanced. This can make spotting sickness harder. Any changes in behaviour should not be ignored as a delay in treatment could worsen recovery chances.
